Christmas is approaching and in both Florence and its province the squares are teeming with markets.
Once the prerogative of the northern countries, Christmas street markets are now a big success here as well, and there are numerous to choose from for gift shopping or to see the towns in the territory in an unusual and charming light.
In Florence, the Weihnachtsmarkt, a German word that means Christmas market, has come to Santa Croce Square from the city of Heidelberg for years.
The stands sell decorations for Christmas trees and homes, Christmas cakes such as Stollen accompanied by the restorative Glühwein (mulled wine); visitors will enjoy not only Christmas food but only German food (especially wurst and sauerkraut) at Santa Croce Square from the 28th of November to the 16th of December.
The markets are now widespread across the province: some of them have a long story, such as the Marradi markets, held on the 2nd, 9th and 16th of December, or those of the nearby village of Palazzuolo sul Senio with its Advent Magic held on the 2nd, 8th, 9th and 16th of December, where visitors can admire stands, nativity scenes, Santa Claus’s chalet and many other surprises in store.
Still remaining close to the Apennines that divide us from Emilia-Romagna, Christmas Flakes at Firenzuola on the 16th of December is worth mentioning.
Still exploring the rest of the territory, it is worth remembering that near Florence, at Signa, the Market of Oberdrauburg and Maromme will be held as early as November 24th and 25th.
In the town of Fiesole, a Merry Christmas – Christmas market will take place on the 9th of December.
The town of Scandicci (which can be easily accessed from the centre of Florence thanks to the Tram Line 1) will host the Christmas markets on the 13th and 16th of December in Matteotti Square.
At Impruneta, the Christmas market will take place on the 23rd of December, at Tavarnuzze on the 22nd.
As far as Mugello is concerned, worth mentioning is Christmas Merchandise at San Piero a Sieve on the 8th of December; at Dicomano, the Christmas markets will be held on the 16th and 23rd of December.
In the Chianti region, Christmas Markets are very successful: they are held at Barberino Val d’Elsa with Christmas in the village on the 8th, 9th, 23rd of December; at Greve on the 8th and 16th of December and in the hamlet of Strada on the 15th.
Finally at Mercatale, in the municipality of San Casciano Val di Pesa, they will take place on the 15th and 16th of December. Not to be missed is the Santa Lucia Fair in the centre of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa on the 16th of December.
In the area of Empoli-Valdelsa, worth mentioning is the Christmas edition of Gourmet, the festival for those who appreciate good food on the 8th and 9th of December at Montelupo Fiorentino.
In the centre of Montespertoli, a market called Christmas among the squares will take place on the 23rd of December.
At Londa, a Christmas market will be held on the 15th of December in the Repubblica square; Consuma, a hamlet of Pelago, the weekend of the 8th and 9th of December should not be missed.
